Just few thoughts about Steve Jobs
Posted on 11. Oct, 2011 by Zahid Lilani. 2
Most in the tech world saw it coming. Yet, no one expected it to be so soon. After he stepped down as Apple CEO, the hope was that he would stick around as a board member and influence the future of Apple. That didn’t happen and he might have known his fate when he wrote this:
“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Appleās CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”
- Steve Jobs resignation letter
In other words, is it fair to say that he predicted his own death? It just feels as if he knew it was coming…
Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other social media platforms were a buzz with Steve Jobs stories, photos, and tributes. I was little turned off by how people in the rest of the world reacted to his death, especially PC users. Its one thing to not care and it’s very tasteless to judge someone based on selective knowledge.
One of my friends on Facebook said, why is everyone mourning a rich and famous person when so many people in poverty die everyday. Another said, stop posting all these articles and status updates because Steve Jobs was not charitable.
He is not being mourned because he was rich and famous, he is being mourned because his rich ideas infiltrated our lives and fame followed him, even though he never wanted to sell his own image, but his products. Second, Apple is a as secretive as it gets. Where do you think Apple gets this from? He wasn’t as charitable as Bill Gates publicly but he was known to have donated anonymously to many different organizations such as Amnesty International. Just think about, he once replied to an email within 15 minutes. What was the email about? Some random pancreatic cancer patient asking for advice and doctor recommendation. He recommended his personal doctor at Stanford Hospital.
Would Gates reply to an email by malaria patient? Probably not but you can’t judge him solely on that. Jobs did what he could in his own peculiar way, it doesn’t matter if he fell short in your view.
What he leaves behind is a legacy unlike any that my generation will see. People like Jobs are born once every generation and their lives show us that if you make your today better than yesterday, sky is the limit.

The scene outside Apple store in San Francisco the day after Steve Jobs died.
Can’t get this quote out of my head:
“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

Video of my visit to San Francisco downtown Apple Store one day after Steve Jobs died. The mood was somber and people were paying their respects with post-it notes, flowers, teddy bears, and lots of Apples.
