Matt Cutts Suggests You Should Not Use Tag Clouds
Posted on 05. Aug, 2010 by Zahid Lilani. 2
Matt Cutts works for Google and specializes in SEO issues. A question was posed to him about tag clouds:
Do tag clouds help or hinder SEO? (or do they have no affect)
What is a Tag Cloud?
A tag cloud is a visual depiction of the keywords (topics) on a blog. Blog posts are marked by certain keywords, all the keywords combined make a tag cloud. Depending on the importance of a keyword or its prominence on the blog, the tags can be larger or smaller in size. Here is an example:

Most blogs have tag clouds instead of categories, some have both. Tags are links pointing to archives on your blog for that particular keyword. An example would be SEO
In answer to the question, Matt Cutts Suggests You Should Not Use Tag Clouds. His reasoning is simple; tags are bunch of links. It is never a good idea to stuff your blog with links, that’s a big NO NO.
He personally doesn’t have tags on his blog, instead he uses categories. Watch the video:
Do you use tag clouds on your blog? Does this video make you think about your decision to use tag clouds?
Create Your Small Business Listing on Google Places
Posted on 20. Jul, 2010 by Zahid Lilani. 10
This post is a follow up of my earlier post about how to Create your small business identity online in 3 easy steps. Most of what I talk about is not rocket science or news but practical steps backed up with years of experience and knowledge. So now that your business has a web presence, it is time to tackle the beast a.k.a Google.
This post is not about SEO or ranking # 1 on Google (that will come later) but about how to create your small business listing on Google Places.
Google Places is similar to Yelp but the only difference is that it is not dominated by bunch of people in their 30s deciding what is good or bad for the rest of us. It is also similar to online yellow pages but smarter with reviews, maps, coupons, statistics and control over each and every aspect of your business identity.
When someone searches for a product or service you sell, Google shows web results as well as results from Google Places and that’s what makes Google Places a crucial online marketing tool.
Here is how you can create your small business listing on Google Places by following these 4 easy steps:
1) Claim it
The first step involves claiming your listing if it is already published on Google Places. If not, you can create one in less than 5 minutes. Just go to Google Places and click on Add New Business. You will need a Google Account in order to complete the registration.
2) Work it
Don’t just put a sentence describing your business. Work at making your listing stand out by providing Google with information it asks you for. Upload photos of your business (at least a logo), videos (if any), select multiple categories (if it applies), service areas (geographical area you serve), timings (open Sundays?), and payment methods (VISA, Master Card etc). You won’t have to do this every day so spend some time on providing as much information as you can.
3) Legitimize it
Most websites have fake testimonials (hint: bunch of people in their 30s) but it is not possible (not impossible) to have fake testimonials on Google Places because business owners are not in control of the reviews. You can legitimize your Google Places listing by asking current and former satisfied customers to write good reviews for your business.
4) Publicize it
You have done the hard part now publicize the link to your businesses on Google Places. Tweet it, Like it on Facebook, blog about it, and email it to your friends.

Movie about Facebook, The Social Network
Posted on 16. Jul, 2010 by Zahid Lilani. 2
Today marks the release of Inception (I desperately want to see this movie) and trailers of an upcoming movie, The Social Network. Most of you will likely refer to this movie as the Facebook movie. People who went to see Inception are reporting that the first trailer they are viewing is that of the movie The Social Network. Don’t worry, the trailer is now available online too.
Looks intense and has a very dark feel to it. That’s because it is directed by David Fincher, in the past he has made Seven and Zodiac.
Can’t wait…
Create Your Small Business Identity Online in 3 Easy Steps
Posted on 12. Jul, 2010 by Zahid Lilani. 7
There are still many small businesses that haven’t embraced the world wide web, let alone social media. Are you one of them? If yes then this post is for you. Here are three easy steps that require you have a credit card and 10 minutes of free time.
Step 1
Register your small business name by going to the #1 domain registrar in the world, GoDaddy.com. You can usually find many coupon codes on Fatwallet and RetailMeNot. Don’t worry about .net or .org, your goal is to get a .com. If .com isn’t available for your business, .net will also work. Make sure your domain name is not very long, can be easily memorized and doesn’t contain any hyphens.
Step 2
Now that you have a domain, move on and signup for web hosting. I don’t recommend signing up for GoDaddy web hosting because it is not considered to be user friendly. All my websites are hosted by HostGator and few of my clients are using WebHostingPad. Haven’t had any issues with them in terms of down time and support. The price is reasonable and you get discounts for signing up for a year. Weight your requirements, contact me if you need help with deciding.
Step 3
When I said 10 minutes is all you need, I wasn’t kidding. To compete on the internet today you need to have a robust backend and user friendly frontend. The only way to achieve that is by using WordPress as your backend. Most people think of WordPress as a blogging platform but it is much more than that. Head over to ThemeForest and look at all the amazing WordPress themes available that you can use for any kind of business.
Let’s recap:
1) Register your small business domain name at GoDaddy.
2) Get web hosting at HostGator or WebHostingPad.
3) Use WordPress as your backend and select a theme from ThemeForest.
If you need help with anything that I have mentioned above, please contact me and I will help you out for free.
