Traditionally, the deadline for filing individual income tax return is April 15th. However, due to the Internal Revenue Service honoring Emancipation Day on April 15th (instead of April 16th), the due date for your individual income tax return is Monday, April 18 2016.

On top of that, due to the Patriot’s Day holiday, residents of Maine and Massachusetts have until Tuesday, April 19th to file their individual income tax return with the IRS.

This same logic applies to states.

For instance, California residents need to file their individual tax returns by April 18th, 2016. If they are Main or Massachusetts residents with a filing requirement in California, their deadline is April 18, 2016.

Please note, if you are e-filing your individual income tax return, it must be submitted by midnight on April 18th. If you are paper-filing, your individual income tax return must be postmarked by April 18 to meet the deadline.

Did you know that if you made less than $62,000 in 2015, you can file your income tax online for FREE?

You’re welcome!

Just in case you can’t file your individual income tax return before the due date, you can always apply for a 6-month extension by completing Form 4868, the Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

The extension, however, is only for filing a return and not an extension of time to pay any tax that may be owed.

If you owe taxes at the time of extension filing, please make sure to pay the amount due by April 18th, 2016. Unpaid taxes incur late-payment penalties and interest.
